Happy International Women’s day!

International women’s day is an incredible way of celebrating the development and growth of women. Celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, it serves as a focal point in the movement of women’s rights, highlighting gender issues and reproductive rights.

To mark such an incredible day, I have had the privilege of organising and hosting celebrations with the support of my law school, Leeds Law School Supporting women in law is something that has always resonated with me. As a student, I engage with communities that support women at all stages of their legal career (not just post-graduate).

With International Women’s Day fast approaching I was intrigued to find out if my law school were planning anything for the occasion. With nothing yet in the mix, I asked if I could take the lead on the celebrations and organise a panel event with a writing competition along side.

Centring discussions around pressing issues such as women in leadership, breaking the glass ceiling and gender bias in law, my intention for the panel event was to celebrate the women of the law school on such a special occasion. My aim was to provide a space for attendees to network, to encourage my fellow students to foster connections post-event.

The event was such a success! I am over the moon with the turnout of last night’s event. Both Carol from Oakwood Solicitors Ltd and Terrell of DAC Beachcroft offered incredible insight into their experiences and progress as women in law. They covered a range of topics, including the progress of women in law and their personal experience of discrimination, to advice they would pass on to students entering the profession. The students asked questions on their thoughts and expanded on what they had said, furthering the conversation and developing a real understanding of how many women feel across the board.

The opportunity to host such an event has been incredibly and I am grateful to the law school for letting me host such an event with their support.
I look forward to what the future brings, and fingers crossed there will be many more events to come!

Happy International Women’s day to all the ladies of my network! Take today to celebrate your growth, achievement and determination to break the glass ceiling!
