Marshalling District Judge Brian Whitehead; March 2024
On Tuesday the 19th of March, I marshalled District Judge Brian Whitehead at Sheffield Combined Courts. Witnessing a day of property repossession, from social housing, private renting, and mortgage, was an incredible opportunity to see how the courts deal with such issues. As a student with a keen interest in property law and experience in property management, this experience was invaluable and provided an added understanding. The ability to see all types of property repossession was also incredibly insightful and gave the opportunity to understand that these issues can happen to anyone, despite their social status.
I was impressed by Brian's ability to handle different situations, particularly those without representation. His empathy and compassion for those involved was clear and made a visible difference in how they felt. It was a powerful reminder that understanding someone's emotions can make all the difference, even in a courtroom. As a student, it was an eye-opening experience that provided a unique perspective on the legal system's handling of property issues.
Additionally, the ability to observe the advocacy presented by legal professionals was an opportunity to improve my own performance. Understanding how they handled themselves, by being to the point, clear and concise in their delivery, has helped my understanding of how I can prepare for future advocating opportunities.
