Hosted by Nick Emerson, President of the Law Society of England and Wales
After my weekly seminars, I had the opportunity to be apart of a roundtable discussion with The Law Society about generative AI and its impact on the legal industry, ranging from students to those in practice.
Hearing from all different firms, big and small, about how they believe this new technology can develop how they deliver legal services but also closing the gap between those eligible for legal aid and those able to afford legal services has been inspiring and insightful. However, their concerns, worries and fears about its impact was also reassuring and a breath of fresh air.
As a student studying law, we are encouraged to engage with this new technology and use it to our advantage. However, be careful not to plagiarise our work. We are told to be creative and unique. But use AI as a tool, despite that no longer being original work of your own.
This can come across as a very blurry message on what this tool is doing and how, if at all, it will help.
Having the opportunity to voice these feelings to a board room full of professionals was both exciting and daunting. However, knowing that my voice has been heard was incredibly rewarding and an amazing experience.
Following this, I had the opportunity to be apart of a Q&A with Nick Emmerson, President of the Law society. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about his experience and journey to where he is now.
Thank you to Leeds Law School for organising both events. It was a pleasure to be apart of both the roundtable and the Q&A.
